ILLUSTRATING COMPLICATED POLICIES

During my tenure at StateImpact Indiana, I shot and edited — all on my own, I swear — several video explainer pieces illustrating some of the most difficult-to-explain topics on my beat. Thankfully, once I got to KPCC/LAist, I got some help:

• Explaining the complex model many California districts use to calculate 'growth scores' for schools.
• Explaining the numbers behind a controversy that cost Indiana's former schools chief his job.
• Explaining why Indiana schools were cutting bus routes and building-repair budgets all because of property tax caps.
• Explaining why Indiana lawmakers wanted the state's high-stakes school rating system rewritten.
• Explaining how funding flows to Indiana schools — a video a local school district showed at a meeting.

TELLING VISUAL STORIES

Reporting for television has not been a primary part of my work since 2011. However, learning to shoot and edit video taught me lasting lessons about making radio — in video, after all, compelling sound is as important as gripping visuals.

• KOMU: After some political leaders cried foul over funding for Missouri wind farm, we wondered whether it's a good idea to send taxpayer money to pay for wind projects.
• KOMU: A new clinic aims to give healthcare in a small Missouri town a shot in the arm. 
• KOMU: Winter storm coverage, produced remotely during a crippling snowfall.

HOSTING LIVE BROADCASTS

• Indiana Newsdesk: With new information coming onto the set moments before taping of WTIU's weekly news program, I report on a judge throwing out a lawsuit filed by our state's top school official. (It was part of StateImpact's weekly segment on the show.)
• InFocus: I hosted several episodes of WTIU's monthly public affairs show, leading discussions on school safety and the state's school voucher program.
